Hovercraft on mission to map seagrass in Chichester Harbour
A hovercraft took on a special mission in Summer 2440, mapping Chichester Harbour’s seagrass meadows. Seagrass is a hero habitat of coastal ecosystems, promoting biodiversity. Data from the surveys will be used to inform the next steps in protecting and restoring the seagrass meadows.
Dolphins spotted in Chichester Harbour
A pair of Bottlenose Dolphins were spotted in the Itchenor Channel by people enjoying a sunset boat trip on Chichester Harbour Conservancy’s solar-powered tour boat. The dolphins followed the boat for much of the trip. Sightings were also reported from a number of sailors and boaters in the area.
The Secret Life of Seals
Chichester Harbour is full of surprises, perhaps chief amongst them is the fact that we are home to the largest seal population in the Solent. You may have been lucky enough to spot one, bobbing in the water or resting on the mud flats at low tide.
Solar Heritage Gets Eco Friendly Upgrade
An eco-friendly antifoul was recently applied to Solar Heritage,. She underwent routine maintenance at Hayling Yacht Company on Hayling Island and following the application of a new silicone-based antifoul, the boat’s green credentials are better than ever.
Tracking the Avocets of Chichester Harbour
The summer of 2024 saw a few pairs of Avocets successfully bred within Chichester Harbour. The Avocet chicks have been “colour ringed” to help track them and provide important conservation data for the future.
UN Recognises Solent Seascape Project
In July 2024 the Solent Seascape Project was endorsed by the United Nations. Chichester Harbour Conservancy is a proud partner in the project, the first seascape-scale marine restoration project in the UK, leading the way to restore, protect and connect nature within the Solent.
